Fukushima nuclear plant worker dies: Third so far, more to come?
A worker at Japan's disaster-stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant has died, its operator said, adding that the death was not necessarily related to radioactive leaks.
The male worker, in his 50s, was taken to hospital for treatment on Wednesday after feeling ill during a regular morning assembly at the plant, some 140 miles north of Tokyo, according to Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO).
He died early morning on Thursday at the hospital, TEPCO spokesman Chie Hosoda said, adding that the cause of his death was being investigated.
"He had been exposed to a small amount of radiation. It is difficult to assume that radiation was a cause of his death," she said.
The unidentified worker had worked for 46 days at the plant to install a tank which will be used for processing contaminated water from the crippled reactor units.
He worked three hours every day and had been exposed to a total of 2.02 millisieverts of radiation, the official said. An exposure of 100 millisieverts per year is considered the lowest level at which any increase in cancer risk is evident. more

Fears UK Is In 'Worst Ever' Economic Crisis - 6th Oct 2011
Britain could be in the grip of the "most serious financial crisis ever", the governor of the Bank of England has exclusively told Sky News.
Sir Mervyn King said the global and UK economies had been turned on their heads in the past three months alone and said: "The world has changed."
The situation could be even worse than the Great Depression of the 1930s, he said, making it crucial do "the right thing" - which in the UK now means pumping more cash into the economy.
Sir Mervyn gave the rare interview after the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to unleash a fresh round of quantitative easing (QE) to stimulate economic growth, while holding interest rates.
The move, which means effectively printing an extra £75bn of cash, has prompted fresh fears that the UK is on the brink of another recession.
The decision marks the first time the Bank of England has extended QE since November 2009, and suggests the MPC is growing more pessimistic about the UK's economic prospects.
There are also fears it will lead to a surge in the already-high rate of inflation, which would erode savings and pension funds. Read More

World's largest solar bridge project gets underway in London
Work on the world's largest solar bridge has started in central London.
The new solar roof spanning Blackfriars Railway Bridge above the River Thames will cover more than 6,000 square meters when finished, according to developers.
Over 4,400 individual photovoltaic panels are expected to produce around 900,000 kilowatt hours of electricity every year, providing the station with half of its energy needs, according to Solar Century, the UK company installing the solar roof.
Annual CO2 emissions are also expected to be reduced by more than 500 tons. more

Earthquake swarm after officials confirm eruption at Iceland volcano Katla
by ClickGreen staff. Published Wed 05 Oct 2011 12:00Measuring devices this morning have picked up a large earthquake swarm, usually a tell-tale sign of a potential volcanic eruption.
The Icelandic Government last month announced it was increasing monitoring Katla, which is one of Europe's most feared volcanoes, following a consistent and strengthening spike of tremors and quakes.
And last week, officials at the Iceland Meteorological Office confirmed a series of smaller eruptions had occurred in July strengthening fears of an imminent, much larger, eruption.
Evidence gathered by geophysicists showed the magma had risen to the height of the glacier ice above the volcano causing it to melt.
They said the high seismic tremors recorded on July 8 and 9 confirmed Katla had become active and started small eruptions.
Today's intense swarm of earthquakes started at midnight and dozens of tremors have been recorded - the strongest with a magnitude of 4 at around 3am.
The country's Public Civil Emergency Authority (Almannavarnir) has already confirmed it has increased its monitoring of Katla but are yet to announce an emergency level.
It follows news that the country's Minister for the Environment, Svandís Svavarsdóttir, has now introduced a raft of new measures to evaluate the potential hazard and estimate the corresponding risk and feasible counter-measures to prevent accidents and minimise the economic damage.
Studies indicate that volcanic activity in Iceland rises and falls so that the frequency and size of eruptions in and around the Vatnajökull ice cap varies with time.
It is believed that four eruptions, that have taken place in the last fifteen years, are the beginning of an active period, during which major eruptions may be expected every two to seven years.
Data provided by the Icelandic Meteorological Office confirms seismic activity has been increasing in the region in recent years, indicating the entry of magma. According to the report, the Hekla volcano is expected to erupt in the near future and an eruption in Katla is also impending.
Katla, which has not experienced a significant eruption for 93 years, is the second largest volcano on Iceland and its eruption will be felt across Europe.
Last year, the country's president Ólafur Grímsson warned "the time for Katla to erupt is coming close, Iceland has prepared and it is high time for European governments and airline authorities all over Europe and the world to start planning for the eventual Katla eruption".
It is believed Katla, named after a vindictive troll of Viking folklore, has the potential to be much stronger and disruptive than the last two Icelandic volcanic eruptions that caused chaos across Europe's air space, grounding flights and closing airports.
Katla is much larger than its neighbouring Eyjafjallajokull – which erupted last year - with a magma chamber about 10 times the size.
Volcanologists warn that if Katla does erupt, the combination of the magma and the large ice sheet covering the volcano could lead to explosive activity and an ash plume for weeks, if not months.
Fifth shark attack in La Réunion - 6th Oct 2011
A French man had a terrifying ten minute wait in the water after a shark attacked him in his kayak and left him shouting out for help.
"It attacked the kayak's hull and took out a chunk," Jean-Pierre Castellani told local radio station Réunion Première after the attack. "I managed to keep my balance and bashed it with the paddle on its head. That made it flee."
"I then capsized and spent ten minutes shouting before being picked up by a boat," he said. "When I found myself in the water I didn't know if it would come back a second time."
The 51-year-old was out in the waters off Saint-Gilles on the west of the island on Wednesday morning when he was attacked by a tiger shark.
The new attack has prompted authorities in the Indian Ocean island to extend the zone where swimming and water activities are banned.
In the last attack, on September 19th, experienced surfer and former bodyboard champion, Mathieu Schiller, was killed.
The wave of attacks is having an impact on tourism to the island, which is one of France's overseas departments.
"Tourists who came here to enjoy the sea are fed up and you see fewer people on the beaches," said one island habitant, reported by daily newspaper Le Parisien. Read More

Anti-Wall Street Protests Spread Nationwide - 6th Oct 2011
Hundreds of people have joined protests in Wall Street - with demonstrations gathering momentum and support as they spread nationwide.
Organised labour joined the Occupy Wall Street protests adding numbers and focus to what is still a very disparate protest movement three weeks since its inception.
It remains uncertain whether this is a watershed moment in American politics, but the protests seem to be striking a chord with more and more people from all walks of life.
There have now been protests in solidarity with the New York demonstrations, in Boston, Los Angeles and several cities in between.
Thursday is expected to see the same in the nation's capital Washington DC.
Some are already drawing comparisons with the anti-Vietnam war marches in the 1970s.
The protests seem to be tapping into a well spring of discontent about America's economy and its politics. Read More

Davutoglu reportedly conveyed a message of warning from the US to Assad. The Iranian report has not been verified by other sources.
According to the Fars news agency, the Syrian president stressed that Damascus will also call on Hezbollah in Lebanon to launch a fierce rocket and missile attack on Israel, one that Israeli intelligence could never imagine. more

Earliest Winter Return in Tahoe since 1969; Snow above 6,000 feet
A cold weather front took aim at Northern California Tuesday, packing a potent punch with as much as 10 inches of snow for the Sierra peaks, the earliest return of winter conditions to Tahoe since 1969, according to weather forecasters.
According to the Central Sierra Snow Lab, the flurries predicted with this storm will make the shortest duration between snow storms since 1969. The lab – located in Norden – got its last measurable snow on July 1 – 96 days ago.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Sierra in advance of the storm. The forecasters predicted 5-10 inches of snow above 6,000 feet with winds gusting to 50 mph below the mountain ridges.
At lake level in Tahoe, the forecasters warned residents to be ready for several inches of slushy snow.Temperatures were expected to drop 15 to 25 degrees when the heart of the storm crosses over the northern half of the state early Wednesday.
"It's unusual for fall. This is more typical of a winter storm," said Steve Anderson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Monterey. "On average, heavy rain doesn't typically start until the end of October in Northern California. So we're a few weeks early." more

Tuberculosis smoking toll 'could reach 40 million'
Forty million smokers could die from TB by 2050, research suggests.
Smokers are about twice as likely to get the lung infection and die from it, compared with non-smokers.
Many of the new TB cases will be in Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Asian regions, according to projections published in the BMJ.
A lung charity said global efforts to fight TB are being undermined by the tobacco industry's "aggressive promotion" of smoking in some places.
Dr John Moore-Gillon is a TB specialist and honorary medical advisor for the British Lung Foundation.
He said: "It is nearly 20 years since the World Health Organization declared tuberculosis to be a 'global health emergency'.
"Since that time rates have risen rather than fallen, and smoking increases the risk of getting - and dying from - TB.
"Concerted international efforts are now under way to try and turn the tide of TB, but this important research shows that all these efforts may be undermined by the tobacco industry's continuing aggressive promotion of smoking in many parts of the world."more

Unions endorse, will join Occupy Wall Street protests - 5th Oct 2011
As the Occupy Wall Street protestors reach the middle of the two-week mark, social media sites like Twitter seem to be spurring similar protests in other cities.A Twitter account called Occupy Boston mentions a city-wide college walkout there Wednesday.
Meantime, the Massachusetts Nurses Association says "hundreds" of the city's nurses will rally with the Occupy Boston protestors on Wednesday. The Nurses Association says the protest will be part of the opening day activities for a national nursing convention being held in Boston.
In New York City, several unions endorsed the two-week-old Occupy Wall Street movement and plan to join the protesters' street theater on Wednesday, labor leaders said.
"It's really simple. These young people on Wall Street are giving voice to many of the problems that working people in America have been confronting over the last several years," Larry Hanley, international president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, which has 20,000 member in the New York area, told CNN. Astronomer predicts dramatic Draconid meteor shower for October 8, 2011

A predicted brief meteor storm for October 8
Canadian astronomer Paul Wiegert announced earlier in 2011 that the annual Draconid meteor shower might produce a brief meteor storm of 1,000 meteors per hour on October 8, 2011.
Canadian astronomer Paul Wiegert announced earlier in 2011 that the annual Draconid meteor shower might produce a brief meteor storm of 1,000 meteors per hour on October 8, 2011.
He said the 2011 Draconid outburst could be expected to occur between 17 and 18 UTC on October 8. This translates into between noon and 1 p.m. Central Daylight Time on October 8 in the U.S. – daylight in North America. Because this shower’s radiant point in the constellation Draco is so far north on the sky’s dome, the shower will be visible primarily in the northern hemisphere. Plus Draco is highest in the sky during the evening hours. Thus the best locations from which to view the shower – according to Wiegert’s May-June 2011 prediction – should be Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
The shower is expected to continue to produce meteors, albeit it at a reduced level, into the North American evening of October 8. So North Americans might still have a chance to see the meteor shower.
A shower of 1,000 meteors per hour would be spectacular indeed. Woot?! Not yet.
Wiegert admits that meteor predictions are not ironclad. He said:
… you never know. Meteor showers are as difficult to predict as rain showers. The Draconids have surprised us before, and they may do so again. I’d encourage anyone outside on the night of October the 8 to look to the northern skies, just in case.
Is the Anonymous Threat to 'Erase' the NYSE Legit?
Some members of the Anonymous hacktivist collective are disputing the legitimacy of a weekend threat by another apparent Anonymous faction to "erase" the New York Stock Exchange "from the Internet on Oct. 10 as part of the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City.
"On Oct. 10, NYSE shall be erased from the Internet. On Oct. 10, expect a day that will never, ever be forgotten," warned a video message posted on TheAnonMessage YouTube channel.
The AnonMessage channel has been used to post several Occupy Wall Street-related video messages since the protest against lax regulation of the financial sector and growing economic inequality began on Sept. 17. Those messages include an initial "official" Anonymous video regarding Occupy Wall Street and a warning sent last week to the New York Police Department that threatened retaliation if "the brutality does not stop" against Occupy Wall Street protestors.

Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday sending columns of ash and rock hurtling high into the air.
The rise in volcanic and earthquake activity prompted authorities to put in place a 2km exclusion zone for tourists and local fishermen.
The Indonesian Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Centre reported that an estimated 6,000-7,000 volcanic earthquakes were recorded daily during the weekend and on Monday. Daily earthquake totals usually do not exceed 100-200.
Seismologists are still attempting to determine the type and scale of the ongoing eruption.
The eruption at Anak Krakatau (which is Indonesian for "Child of Krakatoa"), is the biggest since January 2011 when ash was emitted more than 600 m into the air, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. The volcano also erupted on 29th October 2010 leading Indonesian authorities to issue a level 2 alert.
The island exploded in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people, although some estimates put the death toll much higher. The explosion is considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history, with reports of it being heard nearly 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from its point of origin. The shock wave from the explosion was recorded on barographs around the globe.

Anak Krakatau: Tourists, fishermen told to stay clear of Indonesia’s ‘Child of Krakatoa’ volcano - 4th Oct 2011
AP: Authorities are warning tourists and fishermen to stay more than a mile (two kilometers) from a smoking Indonesian volcano known as “Child of Krakatoa.”The volcano in the Sunda Strait, 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of the capital, Jakarta, was created by the same tectonic forces that led to the 1883 Krakatoa eruption that killed tens of thousands of people.
Its “child,” growing five yards (meters) a year, is now 1,320 feet (400 meters) tall and popular among hikers.
Gede Suantika of the Center for Volcanology says the mountain’s alert level was raised to the second-highest level last week after the number of volcanic tremors soared from 200 a day to 7,200.
Suantika said Tuesday that he worries a powerful burst could shoot incandescent rocks down its slopes and far into the ocean. Source
